Habesha clothing, explained
What is a habesha kemis?
The habesha kemis is the traditional dress of Ethiopia and Eritrea — kemis means “dress” in Amharic. It is a flowing white cotton gown, traditionally handwoven from fetil (hand-spun cotton) and finished with colourful tibeb embroidery along the hem, cuffs and neckline, worn for holidays, weddings and church.
What is the difference between a habesha dress and a zuria?
“Habesha dress” (or habesha libs) is the broad term for Eritrean and Ethiopian traditional clothing. A zuria is a specific ankle-length style worn by Tigrinya women across Eritrea and Ethiopia for holidays, weddings and parties.
What are netela and tibeb?
A netela is the light cotton shawl worn over the shoulders, usually white and often embroidered. Tibeb (also called tilet) is the woven, colourful patterned band that runs along the hem, sleeves and neckline of habesha clothing.
Do you carry regional styles?
Yes — sellers offer regional variations including Gondar, Gojjam, Shewa and Wollo (Wello) habesha kemis, each with its own weaving and tibeb traditions.
What else can I buy, and where does Brhan ship?
Beyond clothing you will find jewelry, hair, coffee, foods and spices, beauty and home décor from independent Eritrean and Ethiopian sellers — shipped worldwide.
